First of all, Merry Late Christmas and Happy New Year 2016!
It has been over 3 months since I last made an update on the game. This does not mean the game development has stopped or slowed down. It has been a crazy few months, being really busy with some new features on the game! We still have a long road ahead of us, but a lot has already been done.
#1 We finally have a working inventory prototype! This inventory system was build from the ground up and took over 1 month and 2 weeks to perfect. Well I have to admit, I first made 2 other types of inventory systems in that time, but I scratched both of them only because I know I can do a lot better. The new system is pretty neat but still rough around the edges. I will try to release some previews of the inventory system with the next update. The inventory system is one of the most important systems in the game, because you use it most of your time and it works with so many other systems in the game, such as crafting and building. So we have to make 100% sure the inventory fits the requirements of our game.
#2 Building System. I took some time off from the inventory system to work a bit on our base building system. My first initial idea for a base building system was to make it similar to that of DayZ Mod Epoch or Rust. While i was busy coding the system, I quickly realized that this is not the type of base building that I want for my game. It might work well for games such as DayZ and Rust but for me, it feels a lot like a hiding hole. Since we don’t have rockets and rifles to take down basses, it will be pointless to have such a type of base. Also it destroys the whole concept of having to watch out for other players. So we will be taking a different approach, more like ‘The Forest’. Creating a village for you and your fellow friends. This also opens up the possibility of animal attacks and stampedes. So having a more open base will keep you on your toes for other threats that can still destroy you in the blink of an eye.
#3 So I finally have our new character model and it’s animations. So for now, all I have to do is blend the animations into one smooth system, like I showed in the previous update. there isn’t much else to say about the animations for now. Still a lot of work to do on the animations to smooth it out.
I’m planning to see if I can get our base building, inventory and new player added to the map and then start working on the crafting system. I have a lot more to share, but that will come in a future update.
